Udit Narayan melted our hearts with the song "papa kehte hain...". Little did he know he would create history of sorts in the Tamil Nadu government (which is becoming a tamil industry by itself) almost 3 decades later!!
Our own papa-appa headed Tamil Nadu Government came up with a proposal in their latest budget in Feb 2009; the government is offering a gold ring to newborns with a chaste tamil name. Now what a chaste tamil name is, nobody knows! Not even the authorities that came up with this idea. The height of ridicule here is that these guys have so much time and have the guts to say they will shell out so much money. Correction, OUR money, that we, the taxpayers, in spite of recession, extreme heat and pressure manage to pay up - all on the basis of some random birth certificate of a child's name!!
The irony is - why do they want to force people to name their children with a tamil name, what extra perks does the child get? WHY is not just a three letter word when it comes to Tamil Nadu politics. It is a deadly weapon used only when the situation is not favourable (read lesser money in a politician's pocket).
What will these guys think of next? I recommend they put their precious brains on publishing a book on "tamil chaste names for your babies" - more for the flavour of the season...
I am heading to the nearest registrar office to change my name to Tamilvannan or something, maybe they will grant me a copper ring... Maybe my life will change totally; You never know - I might become the next US President, just for having a tamil name!!

First it was movies - some tax cut was granted if the title was in Thamizh; now, babies will get gold rings.
